The Hawaiian Bat: ‘Ōpe’ape’a

Few people have ever seen the small Hawaiian hoary bat, perhaps the rarest bat in the world. Shy and solitary, it lives in the forests of Hawaii and Kauai, emerging at sunset to hunt flying insects.  Bats, unfairly despised and feared, are complex creatures beneficial to humans.

This injured baby Hawaiian bat was rescued on Kauai and now lives at the Honolulu zoo.

A bat’s wing has four fingers and a thumb.
