When Shu-li is born, her mother wraps her in a red blanket and leaves her under a bridge. In this country, the rule is only one child per family. The family, who needs strong hands to harvest the fields, thinks, “No room for girls.” An old woman finds Shu-li and takes her to an orphanage.  A woman flies halfway around the world looking for a baby, finds Shu-li, and takes her to America and a new life. This book was inspired by a friend’s personal experience and by conversations with many other parents who have adopted Chinese girls.
