The Hawaiian Bat, ‘ōpe’ape‘a

bat book

illustrated by Pearl Maxner

University of Hawaii Press, 2005

Few people have ever seen the small Hawaiian hoary bat, perhaps the rarest bat in the world. Shy and solitary, it lives in the forests of Hawai‘i and Kaua‘i, emerging at sunset to hunt flying insects.  Bats, unfairly despised and feared, are complex animals that are of great benefit to humans.
